Colorism in the media : Discussion

Making Authenticity The New Standard
By: Katrina O'Brien

The influence of the mass media can shape an audiences views and beliefs. That goes for television, films and digital media. The power of what is put out there can develop a new way to how we see others, and especially how we see ourselves. Today, I will be speaking with Angharad N. Valdivia, a research professor at the University of Illinois. We will be discussing Angharad’s book, Latino/as in the Media,  the history of underrepresentation of the Latin community in the media, how it relates to the blockbuster film In The Heights. Lastly, we will be discussing diversity within ethnicities. Will this be the “wake up call” for the future of the media?
